Welcome. Everyday, people in the heartland who are affected by ALS provide inspiring examples of courage and grace as they face this terrible disease.
At ALS in the Heartland, we aim to enhance the quality of life of all people affected by ALS whom we help serve, to heighten community awareness of this devastating disease, and to strengthen public and legislative support in the fight against ALS. Our services include in-home consultations, support groups, community resources and referrals, an equipment program and a respite care voucher program. In 2008 ALS in the Heartland initiated a Skills for Grief Therapy Program and expanding our Mobility Program.
Please explore our web site to learn about the services and resources we provide. There are many opportunities available for you to join in our efforts. Patients and caregivers struggle daily with this disease.

UNMC Patient
Portrait Project
Mark Gilbert's Portrait of
Roger Poulin
Our dear friend Roger Poulin died on July 12 from complications caused by ALS. We mourn his passing, and we mourn the recent loss of many others in our service area who had been affected by ALS.
Lt. Col. Roger Poulin, of Bellevue, Nebraska, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former pilot for Comair is survived by his wife, Dolores, who advocated for the ALS Registry Act on Capitol Hill in May 2007and their children Mike, of Omaha, and Michelle Rasschaert, of Minneapolis, and many relatives and friends.
Artist Mark Gilbert, of Glasgow, Scotland, completed this portrait of Roger. It's part of the UNMC Patient Portraiture Project with Ethics Approval. In January 2009 the Portraiture Project will open at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. |
